[The Man’s or] The Leader’s first concern is for the couple; not the steps he wants to lead. For this to happen, the leader must surrender to his partner in the same way as the follower must surrender to his lead. He must surrender any image of what he wants [or] expects to do and open himself to the possibility of what might develop.

JOHANNA SIEGMANN, "The Tao of Tango".

Welcome ! Benvenuti !! Bienvenue !!!

2º Tango-Triora è dedicato alla memoria di:

Carlos Gavito

IN MEMORIAM

R.I.P.

[The Woman or] The Follower must be completely centred and balanced so that she can move at an instant’s notice, in any direction …she must be in complete control of her body in order to surrender control of where she is going …[and she] must be mentally alert …to respond at the speed and with the precision that is required.

SALLY POTTER, "Tango Aphorisms".

A big welcome to one and all to the second Tango-Triora milonga! For those who are new to Argentine Tango, this introduction to the differences between it and so-called tango (ballroom tango) might be useful:

In Europe and North America, what has often been called ‘tango’ is actually not really Tango at all. It is a ballroom dance that poorly reflects the real thing. It is a ballroom dance that refracts and distorts Argentine Tango. Ballroom tango is a mere shadow of the passionate dance that is Argentine Tango. Ballroom tango is a weak distillation of something far stronger, far superior; it is a mal-extraction of something integral to the cultures of Uruguay and Argentina (brought from Italy, mostly); it is a dance reduced from an intimate and unique experience to an often boring series of similar steps or fanciful actions played out to awful music. No matter how many times one dances a Argentine Tango, even if it’s with the same partner and the same music (of which there are some 40,000 mostly wonderful pieces of music written), it should never be quite the same experience twice. Ballroom tango reduced Argentine Tango to a sterile set of figures and perverse body positions. Argentine Tango should be danced in a closed embrace or at least facing each other, not bending away from each other! Ballroom turned Tango upside-down and ripped its heart out; it introduced strict rules; it borrowed some imagery from Tomb of Tutankamun-inspired Art Deco stylization, from which it derived its ‘square’ or ‘jagged’ postures and holds – in so-doing it reduced a social dance of endless possibilities to a tight and quite silly spectacle - for performers and for dancers. Argentine Tango is for all and it has the emotion, the creativity, the playfulness & the intensity that is missing in ballroom dancing. It can be simple or complex but it is not dull. It can be slow or fast. It should always be beautiful. It is immensely pleasing to watch and to dance. It is the art of improvisation. It is a way of life.
